PRESS RELEASE - BASIC NECESSITIES.ORG

Shoes and Socks Holiday Season Collection - 07/12/2007
A benefit for underprivileged K-6 children in the Tri-Valley Area, and school age children in Cuba.

We are accepting donations of gently used or new shoes in children's sizes K8 - K12, or financial donations of any size.

To provide shoes and socks for needy children in our local community and a few rural areas of Cuba.  We have selected for support three Livermore K-6 schools: Marylyn Avenue Elementary, Jackson Avenue Elementary, and Portola Elementary, and three rural areas in Cuba: Guantanamo, Santiago de Cuba, and Camagüey.

There are a large number of people in our local community who cannot afford to buy new clothes for their children.  The neighborhoods surrounding the Livermore schools we selected are among the poorest in our area.  Many of the children who go to these schools wear the same clothes day after day, typically used clothes, and new clothes are a rarity for them.  Please help us provide shoes and socks for these kids with a donation of gently used or new shoes, or a cash donation.

In Cuba, school age children are not even allowed to go to school if they don't have the proper shoes.  In many rural areas, parents cannot afford to buy their children shoes and consequently they are not able to attend school.  Due to issues related to shipping clothes to Cuba, the shoes must be purchased in Cuba, so please help us provide for these children with a cash donation of any size.
