PRESS RELEASE - BASIC NECESSITIES.ORG

Nosotras En Control Summer Self Esteem Program for Young Latinas - 06/23/2008

BasicNecessities.org, a Livermore charitable organization, in conjunction with Las Positas College, and the Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District's Migrant Education program, are hosting Nosotras En Control (We Are In Control).  Nosotras En Control is a program that was created during the summer of 2007.  It is a program for middle-school and high-school aged Latina girls. Nosotras En Control works with Latina girls who are the first or second generation of their family to live in the Unites States. They are also typically the first women in their families to attend school after the primary grades, and thus the first to have a chance at graduating from high school.

The goal of the Nosotras En Control program is to empower and educate young Latinas in the Tri-Valley so that they can become the leaders of tomorrow. This program focuses on building self-esteem, making positive choices and creating an educational plan.  For many of the girls in this program gangs and teenage pregnancy are what await them if they do not “take control” when they are young. The summer workshops range in topics from health and exercise to careers in science and technology. Funding is provided by grants from Northrop Grumman, Sorologists International of Livermore, Kaiser Permanente, and the Migrant Education Program in Livermore.  The theme of this summer's program is Eres Especial (You Are Special).  The first Nosotras en Control program was held during the summer of 2007, as was well received by the local Latina Community.

Opening ceremonies for the program are June 30 from 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm at Las Positas College, building 2400.  Workshops are July 1 - 3 from 1:30 to 3:30, and closing ceremonies are July 3 from 4:30 to 6:30.
